Komen Community Challenge - June 7

Date Written by Jason Keeling on June 3, 2007

To raise awareness of the need to improve breast cancer education, treatment and prevention–especially in southern West Virginia–Susan G. Komen for the Cure is hosting a June 7 “Komen Community Challenge” in Charleston (10:00 a.m., Appalachian Power Park).

Want to do something positive this week? Here’s a worthwhile initiative that could have a tremendous impact for women across the state. But like any policy issue, it takes public involvement to get government moving.

Sen. Dr. Dan Foster, Dels. Cliff Moore and Nancy Gutherie, cancer survivors and other healthcare advocates will be in attendance. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is calling on the West Virginia Legislature and Gov. Joe Manchin to provide full funding for the West Virginia Cancer Plan. The West Virginia Cancer Plan was written by Mountains of Hope, West Virginia’s Cancer Coalition consisting of more than 130 community-based organizations, research and academic institutions, public and private agencies, coalitions, voluntary associations, patient advocacy groups, and other cancer-related organizations.

I will be coaching my clients that day, but will be with them in spirit. We’ve all had women close to us who have been taken by this terrible disease. I think Appalachian women are especially vulnerable because of inadequate access to health care benefits, in many cases.

Using your blog to promote causes you believe in is a great idea (and one of the great reasons to have your own blog). Bravo, Jason! It’s great that you’re using images to spruce up your posts too because this both adds visual appeal and breaks up the monotony of blocks of text. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for bringing attention to this worthy cause…why not add local links for the West Virginia Komen initiative?
