Improving W.Va. Communities One Volunteer at a Time
Written by Jason Keeling on April 11, 2008
Volunteering is a great way to become part of your community. Coming together for the benefit of a common cause enriches both those who contribute and those who will directly benefit. Generation Charleston’s community outreach team will host its first quarter service project on Saturday, April 19, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Volunteers may donate their time, during a morning or afternoon shift, to one of the many programs provided by the YWCA of Charleston:
- YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women and Families provides shelter, food and support services to 1,200 homeless individuals, including 300 children annually. Volunteers needed to cook, serve food, and paint.
- YWCA Shanklin Center provides permanent housing and support services for elderly, disabled women who are homeless as a result of abuse. Volunteers needed to paint.
- YWCA Past & Present Gently Used Clothing Store provides revenue to support the Alicia McCormick Homes. These homes provide up to 18 months of housing and support services for battered and homeless women and children as they transition to self-sufficiency. Volunteers needed to sort and hang clothes.
- YWCA Child Enrichment Center provides enriched child care for a diverse population of more than 300 children a year. No family is denied service based on inability to pay. Volunteers needed to paint.

Thanks for highlighting the YWCA’s social service programs, which are fantastic. My wife would thank you as well…she’s the development director for the YWCA.

Thanks to all the Generation Charleston members who made “Y We (Generation Charleston) Volunteer” a huge success. Karin Hamer, our manager of Past & Present Gently Used Clothing, said this was the best group of volunteers she’s ever had!!
