Highlight Posts 1 | Blogging for a Better West Virginia
Written by Jason Keeling on June 3, 2008
Development of the aBetterWestVirginia blog began in April 2007, and the site was officially launched June 20 (West Virginia Day). Since that time, four authors have contributed 44 blog posts, and 164 readers (thank you) have commented. The overall readership continues to grow steadily.
If the responsible company can maintain this blog project’s momentum, we hope to expand the depth of authors and increase posting frequency as the year progresses. For now, check back once a week for new content, or feel free to sign up for automatic update notifications using the site’s RSS feed or via e-mail.
Since many are new to the aBetterWestVirginia blog, we’ve decided to highlight some content that you missed, and encourage you to add further comments to these older posts. Meantime, we’ll be preparing to launch and promote “aBetterWestVirginia Day” on June 20, 2008, and welcome any suggestions regarding that effort.

The image of people in WV is something most of us want to change for the better. We are tired of being cast in a dim light and being the brunt of bad jokes. How do we respond when someone like Dick Cheney cracks a joke about WV and he stands there laughing his head off? Sure he can apologize, but he has done a great deal of damage to the image of people from WV.
Blog readers, “What do you think of the remark made by Dick Cheney”?

I think this site serves a great purpose for WV. It’s a great project for developing social media and bloggers in West Virginia.
I enjoy each post and comment made and look forward to reading it for years to come!

May I suggest a category in the left hand margin for LINKS to other websites related to your topic, “a better West Virginia.” One such website is Hillary Homburg’s blog http://www.blenkoproject.org/
Hillary is a dental student at WVU. She is passionate about promoting and advocating for Blenko Glass in Milton WV. She has a non-profit website in which she brings people together to discuss Blenko Glass.
At the very least, please feature her in one of your posts. An article was written about her for the WVU alum magazine this past month. She is one impressive West Virginian. Blenko is impressive hand-blown glass!
Thank you,

Another good link to add would be that of Goldenseal Magazine: A publication dedicated to Traditional Life in West Virginia.
http://www.wvculture.org/goldenseal
John Lilly is a fabulous editor (and musician) who, I’m sure, would appreciate the publicity for his stellar magazine. The Summer 2008 edition has three articles about Fenton Glass, one about Bridgeort, Organ Cave, Rainelle Airport, and moonshine. Goldenseal has it all!

To discover an image of any region or people which rings true and holds up to scrutiny, it is first of all necessary to return to its origins. We cannot see what lies ahead if we have forgotten where we started. There are many stories to be told of the earliest days of what is now West Virginia, and most have been told elsewhere already. But one story, which ties the origins of this region to the origins of the nation, deserves to be told more often. It involves a document which, while little known except to scholars, is nonetheless a key document in the early history of our nation, and its drafting and signing were witnessed by hundreds of men whose descendents still live in West Virginia today. The full story can be read at http://prickettsfort.wordpress.com/ under the heading: “Backwoods Virginians and the ‘First Declaration of Independence’”
